Garage Door Weatherstripping & Seal Repair Red Deer
![]() Every garage has some fixed and a few moving parts. Seals are an integral part of all garage doors, regardless of their type, material or construction and method of operation. Garage door seals are an integral component of the whole installation. They play one of the key roles in weather stripping. The seals effectively protect the interior space of a garage from weather and debris from outside. Typically, all
garage doors have bottom seals and some may also have overhead seals, lateral seals or other variants. Garage door seals at the bottom are also known as astragal or gasket. They are necessary because of the uneven surface of the ground or floor. Even concrete is not perfectly even. There will be some gaps or spaces that may compromise weatherproofing. Insulation will be ineffective if there are gaps. There is an increase risk of water inflow if it rains heavily. Melting snow may seep in through the space. Basically, seals keep out snow, rain, grass, leaves and insects among others. There are different types of garage door seals. The most common types of weatherstripping are bulb, beaded, J-shape or J-type and T-shape or T-type. A bulb seal is so named because of the circular bottom with a typical T shape at the top. Beaded seals are meant for double channel retainers and are usually T-shaped with circular grooves. J-type seals resemble the shape of J. they are common in single channel retainers. T-type seals may be beaded or not. If not, then they resemble the shape of T on both the sides and are meant for double channel retainers. Overhead garage doors may also have bottom seals. Bulb seals are the most common in such types of doors. There may be thermal seals for regions that have an extreme climate, either too hot or too cold. Such seals may be made of vinyl. Threshold seals are used for protection against water. While vinyl seals work best on wood, threshold seals are more suited for concrete floors. All types of seals come in different sizes. You can choose the strength depending on the kind of car or vehicle you own and hence the weight that the material must withstand. Some seals will elevate the surface of the ground or floor a little. Commercial properties or buildings usually have brush seals in the garage doors. These are more suitable because the high and heavy friction can easily wear out standard seals.
