There are many aspects to consider when repairing your garage door. By following some simple steps, garage door repair is easy and straightforward.
The Garage Door Itself Whether it rolls up in pieces or is one piece that swings up, garage doors move on metal tracks connected to the wall. The door is also powered with heavy springs, or on some doors there is a single spring, providing the necessary power to operate. There are easy steps to take when looking at your potential garage door repair.
Step 1: It is important to make sure you work with the garage door closed to avoid accidents when working. The metal tracks are held to the wall with mounting brackets that can come loose. The screws or bolts can simply be tightened if needed. The metal tracks can also be damaged, so look for folds, dents, and flat spots. If found, these can be pounded out using a hammer or rubber mallet and a piece of scrap
wood. Finally, if the tracks are badly enough damaged, replacements may be required. It is also a good
idea to clean the tracks to remove dirt and grease. A concentrated household cleaner should do the job.
Step 2: Another problem with the tracks can be whether or not they are aligned. You can easily check this
with a level. Horizontal tracks should slant slightly downward toward the back of the garage. Vertical
tracks, on the other hand, should be exactly even. If they are not aligned, then you will need to loosen the
bolts or screws—but absolutely do not remove them—and tap the tracks into place. Recheck the tracks
before tightening the bolts or screws once more.
Step 3: If you are still having problems with your garage door repair, then you can recheck all the
hardware. You will have to check the plates where the springs are mounted and the screws and bolts and
hinges all along the door. Tighten anything that needs it and replace anything that no longer fits to make
sure the tracks and brackets and springs are as tight as possible. (If a door has only one torsion spring at
the center, then you should not attempt to fix it. Call a professional because the tension is great enough
to cause injury).
Another problem to consider would be the garage door opener that may need replacing, but that is
separate from the garage door itself. If you are still experiencing problems with your garage door, then
you may find it necessary to call a professional.
